Best Overall: Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain Lock
Short summary
The hardened double deadbolt design gives additional protection against twist attacks.
The Fahgettaboudit chain is an absolute monster! Made from 13mm manganese steel it’s almost impossible to cut through with conventional tools, meaning that bolt-croppers are your biggest worry if you secure it properly.
With a length of 3ft this chain is perfect for large motorcycles, making it the best motorbike security chain on the market.
Despite weighing almost 8kg, because of its length, you can secure your bike without removing your rear wheel – great news if you are walking/cycling to work!
Features:
- Material: MAXPerformance steel shackle; 3t manganese steel; nylon
- Finish Type: Enamel
- Special Feature: Dishwasher Safe
Runner Up: OnGuard Brute STD U-Lock and Cable Lock
Short summary

Another brilliant double deadbolt lock, this one made from 10mm hardened steel and protected by vinyl sheathing. It also comes with a 4ft long Kryptoflex cable, perfect for securing wheels and seats from being stolen.
The only downside is the weight – at 1kg more than the Series 2, this lock isn’t very portable for most! This lock can be purchased via Amazon.
Features:
- Material: Alloy Steel, Rubber
- Item Dimensions: LxWxH 9.1 x 9.1 x 9.1 inches
- Item Weight: 2.5 Pounds
Alternative: Kryptonite KryptoLok Heavy Duty U Lock
Short summary
The new “pass-thru” crossbar design includes enhanced anti-rotation features, providing advanced protection against twist and single-cut style attacks.
This lock is both incredibly strong and versatile, with a great-looking design. It’s made from 12mm manganese steel and has additional vinyl sheathing to protect your bike’s paintwork.
The Series 2 has a double deadbolt locking mechanism that makes it almost impossible to snap – even with a laser cutter. It also comes with a 4ft long Kryptoflex cable, perfect for securing wheels and seats from being stolen. The only downside is the weight – at over 3kg this lock will not be very portable for most!
This lock can be purchased via Amazon here.
Features:
- Material: Hardened Performance steel shackle
- Finish Type: Painted
- Item Dimensions: LxWxH 9.02 x 4.02 x 1.18 inches
Alternative: Abus Granit X-Plus 540 U Lock
Short summary
Two keys are supplied with this lock, and with LED-lighted automatic keyhole cover against dirt and corrosion
This beast of a lock is made from 13mm manganese steel and has a protective vinyl sheath to protect your bike’s paintwork. The shackle can be extended up to 160cm, reducing the chance of your bike being moved without you noticing anything amiss. It also comes with three keys, although they are all the same.
The lock has a security rating of 15/15 which makes it virtually uncuttable. It’s definitely worth paying that little bit extra for this one! The only downside is that you cannot use this lock without removing your bike’s rear wheel.
This lock can be purchased via Amazon.
Features:
- Material: Alloy Steel
- Item Dimensions: LxWxH 11.61 x 7.48 x 7.68 inches
- Lock Type: Key Lock
Alternative: Oxford Monster XL Lock and Chain
Short summary
Ultra-strong padlock with hardened boron steel armor casing, and double locking mechanism.
This monster lock is a beast, made with 16mm hardened steel and weighing in at almost 5kg! This makes it incredibly difficult to cut through – even by professionals.
The XL also comes with a special bracket that allows you to attach the lock without removing your bike’s rear-wheel – meaning there is no need to take any additional security measures.
It is said to be perfect for both mopeds and motorcycles, with its length of 145cm making it suitable for most types of bike. Be warned though – at 50 quid this lock is not cheap!
Features:
- Material: Alloy Steel
- Item Dimensions: LxWxH 11.02 x 1.57 x 3.54 inches
- Lock Type: Key Lock, Combination Lock
Alternative: Master Lock Street Cuff Locks
Short summary
For indoor and outdoor use; Cuff locks are best used for motorcycles, mopeds, street bikes and scooters.
The locks are made of hardened steel, which makes them very tough to cut through. On top of this, they also have two internal mechanisms that make it quite hard for bolt-croppers to get the job done. This doesn’t mean that they cannot be cut through, as some reviewers have mentioned that they were able to see through them with a machete.
That being said, at £12.99 and with a 4/5 security rating (the highest on the list) motorcycle lock is still an excellent buy for anyone on a budget!
Features:
- Material: Alloy Steel
- Item Dimensions: LxWxH 15 x 5 x 2 inches
- Finish Type: Polished
Types of Motorcycle Lock
There are three main types of motorcycle lock;
- Disc Locks (Locking Wheel Nut)
- Cable Locks
- Chain Locks (Security Chains)
Disc Lock
This type of lock is by far the quickest and most convenient to use, making it perfect for club meets where you want to leave your bike for a short period of time.
To protect the disc you simply slide it through your brake rotor and tighten it with the key, that’s all there is to it! You’ll find that most manufacturers will fit these locks when you buy your motorcycle; if not they can be purchased separately on Amazon.
Cable Lock
These locks are very versatile; they can be used to secure your wheels and seat keeping them safe, or in conjunction with a U-lock to make it even harder for thieves to steal your bike! They also come in two parts with quick-release connectors, which means you can strap your bike to a lamppost or a bike rack without having to remove the wheel!
As far as physical security goes these locks probably aren’t going to offer you much protection – if someone really wants your motorbike they will find a way of getting it – but they are still an effective deterrent for opportunistic thieves.
Chain Lock
These chains are incredibly secure and will make it very difficult for thieves to steal your bike. They are made from tough manganese steel, which is almost impossible to cut with conventional tools – reducing the likelihood of you being able to get your bike back should it be stolen.
These chains are incredibly secure, but because of their length it can be difficult to lock your bike up in public places – they are certainly not as convenient as the first two types listed! These are definitely the best option for securing your motorbike at home, however.
You’ll find that many manufacturers will fit a chain lock to your bike as standard – if not you can purchase onAmazon
